Cleaners

I am pretty sensitive to bathroom cleaners. Most of them make me dizzy and give me a headache. When Clorox came out with their Greenworks line I was thrilled. It worked great and I didn't feel like I was going to fall over dead. But recently our Walmart stopped carrying most of the Greenworks products. I checked a couple other places and they didn't have it either.
I was bummed and was almost out of bathroom cleaner. So, I went on-line and started to research homemade cleaners. I was pretty skeptical but the cleaners contained ingredients I already had here at home so all I would be out was a $1 spray bottle.
I made the basic bathroom cleaner and it works great! It got the hair spray residue off the vanity and left the faucet shiny! But I wasn't at all impressed with how it cleaned the shower. After my third time to use it I was starting to get a yucky soap scum build up. So, I did a little more searching and found a shower scrub and it is awesome. It took that nasty build up off with just a little elbow action!
I thought I was teetering on the side of nuts when I started to make our own laundry detergent, but now bathroom cleaners... I'm not quite sure what to think of myself! Ha!

Basic Bathroom Cleaner
  • 1 teaspoon Borax
  • 2 cups hot boiled Water
  • 1/2 teaspoon liquid dish soap (not concentrated dish soap)
  • 3 tablespoons white Vinegar
  • 15 drops Lavender essential oil
  • 10 drops Eucalyptus essential oil
  • 5 drops Tea Tree essential oil
Combine all the ingredients together until the powders are dissolved. After cooling to room temperature pour into a clean spray bottle. (You do not have to use the essential oils for it to work effectively)
*Be sure to use a new bottle, do not re-use a bottle that contained a different cleaner, you do not want to accidentally mix chemicals. Label your spray bottle*

Bathtub Cleaner
  • 1/3 cup Borax
  • 1/3 cup Baking Soda
  • 1 teaspoon liquid dish Soap
  • 5 drops Rosemary essential oil
  • 5 drops Tea Tree essential oil
Combine all the ingredients in a small. (I used an old rubbermaid bowl from my kitchen that had seen better days to mix and store it in) Mix until it forms a damp paste. (Again the essential oils are not necessary)
Use as you would any bathtub scrub, such as Comet.

I love that these are all natural ingredients. Obviously I wouldn't let my girls play with the cleaners, but I'm not worried about them being in the bathroom with me while I clean. The other day I let Ashlyn play in the tub while I cleaned the vanity and toilet, it kept her occupied and out of my way. Vinegar is a great antibacterial cleaning agent and the borax is good for whitening and deodorizing. I promise your bathroom won't smell like a big vinaigrette salad when your done, the smell evaporates. :)
Oh, and an added bonus. It's super cheap!
